Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to real questions.

What follows are the questions patients ask us most often — about how we practice, what to expect, how cancer care works alongside conventional treatment, and the practical details of scheduling, payment, and labs.

Getting Started

How is naturopathic medicine different from conventional medicine?

Naturopathic medicine focuses on identifying and removing the root causes of illness, supporting the body's innate healing capacity, and using the least-invasive interventions that achieve real results. We use the same diagnostic tools — labs, imaging, physical exams — but we interpret them through a different lens, looking for upstream causes rather than just managing downstream symptoms. We also collaborate with conventional doctors rather than replacing them.

How is integrative oncology different from "alternative" cancer care?

Integrative oncology works alongside conventional cancer treatment — chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, surgery — to support the patient through it and improve outcomes. "Alternative" approaches typically reject conventional medicine. Integrative oncology is grounded in published research, drug-nutrient interaction expertise, and active coordination with your medical oncologist. We never recommend abandoning conventional treatment.

Do I need a referral?

No. Patients can self-refer for any of our services. That said, if you're working with a specialist (oncologist, rheumatologist, GI doctor, etc.), we strongly encourage open communication with them, and with your permission we'll coordinate directly.

How do I know if you're the right fit for me?

If you want depth, time, evidence-based protocols, and a partner in your care — we're likely a good fit. If you're looking for a quick prescription, an instant fix, or care fully covered by insurance, we may not be. The best way to find out is a brief discovery conversation. Email us and we'll set one up.

Visits, Logistics & Telemedicine

What does an initial visit look like?

Initial visits are 60 minutes via secure video, preceded by hours of chart review by Dr. Shelly. We'll discuss your full medical history, current symptoms, prior labs, medications, and goals — then begin building your personalized care plan. Lab orders and supplement protocols typically follow within five business days.

Where can I be located to be seen?

Currently, Dr. Shelly is licensed to provide telemedicine in Wisconsin and Illinois. Our brick-and-mortar location opens fall 2026 in the Pleasant Prairie, WI area, which will serve patients across southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois in person.

What happens between visits?

Real change happens between appointments. You'll have access to our patient portal for clinical messaging, supplement protocols are delivered through Fullscript, and follow-ups are paced to your specific case rhythm — sometimes annual, sometimes weekly during difficult chapters.

How long are follow-up visits?

Follow-ups are typically 30 or 45 minutes depending on case complexity. Oncology cases in active treatment often need more frequent, longer visits; stable wellness patients may only need quarterly check-ins.

Insurance, Payment & Cost

Do you accept insurance?

We are a cash-pay practice — meaning we don't bill insurance directly. We provide detailed superbills you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. HSA and FSA cards are accepted for most services.

Why don't you bill insurance?

Honestly, because the alternative is worse for patients. Insurance billing forces practices toward shorter visits, restricts which labs can be ordered, and requires coding everything as a billable diagnosis. A cash-pay model lets us spend the time your case actually deserves and order what you actually need — without insurance dictating your care.

Is the cost worth it?

Only you can answer that. What we can tell you is that we won't pressure you into protocols, supplements, or visits you don't need. If something is genuinely outside your budget, we'll tell you what's truly essential and what can wait. Care should be sustainable, not extractive.

Cancer Care Specifics

My oncologist told me not to take supplements during chemo. How does that work with you?

Your oncologist is right to be cautious — many supplements do interfere with conventional cancer treatment, and most oncologists don't have time to research each one. Dr. Shelly's expertise is specifically in drug-nutrient interactions in cancer care: knowing which supplements are safe, which actively help, and which to avoid during your specific regimen. We'll communicate directly with your oncology team and only recommend what's safe and supportive.

Will you replace my oncologist?

No, and we wouldn't want to. Naturopathic oncology is meant to complement conventional cancer treatment, not replace it. You should continue with your medical oncologist, surgical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and any specialists you're working with. Our role is the integrative layer — supporting you through treatment and beyond.

Can you help with cancer prevention if I'm high-risk?

Yes — this is one of our most rewarding areas. If you have BRCA mutations, strong family history, or have had pre-cancerous findings, we build long-term prevention plans that go far beyond annual screening. Diet, lab monitoring, supplement protocols, lifestyle, hormone considerations — all calibrated to your specific risk profile.

Do you treat childhood cancer?

Pediatric integrative oncology is a specialty within a specialty, and yes — Dr. Shelly works with pediatric cases in coordination with your child's pediatric oncology team. The care is deeply family-centered.

Supplements, Labs & Treatment

How do I get supplements you recommend?

We dispense supplements through Fullscript — a professional-grade dispensary you'll access through a private patient portal. This ensures you're getting tested, pharmaceutical-grade products (not Amazon knockoffs), with practitioner discounts, and easy reordering. Auto-refill is available.

What labs do you use?

For specialty testing, we work with the labs leading integrative practices trust: NutrEval (nutrient and metabolic), GI Effects (microbiome and digestion), Sanesco NeuroLab (neurotransmitters and adrenal), MaxGen (genomics), and various food sensitivity panels. For standard blood work and chemistry, we use Quest, LabCorp, and other partners — sometimes billable through insurance.

Can you order regular blood work for me?

Yes. We can order standard chemistry panels, CBCs, thyroid panels, hormone panels, and so on — typically through Quest or LabCorp where insurance often covers the cost. We'll review the results in detail with you, which is often where the real value comes from.
